MTK accelerates the development of nature credit markets by establishing a Buyers’ Club for nature credits

Finland and The Central Union of Farmers and Forest Owners (MTK) are frontrunners in the development of nature credit markets. More actions are about to come. The Finnish Ministry of the Environment published a roadmap for nature credit markets on 1 June. At the launch event, stakeholders called for buyers to take a more active role in accelerating market development. To activate buyers and provide confidence in demand, MTK is establishing a Buyers’ Club to accelerate market development, says MTK’s Executive Director Jyrki Wallin.
Nature credit markets in Finland are developing rapidly. To encourage potential buyers, MTK is inviting Finnish companies and organisations to join the Buyers’ Club.
-“We have already identified numerous companies that MTK will soon approach. These companies are key actors with the potential to become buyers of domestic nature credits and to act as enablers and frontrunners in the early stages of the market,” explains MTK’s Forest Director Marko Mäki‑Hakola.
EU Commission is planning a so‑called Buyers’ Club for carbon markets, and MTK wants now to introduce a similar model for nature credit markets. The Buyers’ Club is not a closed community; MTK is also opening the opportunity for other interested companies to join by registering through MTK’s website.
-“The Buyers’ Club brings confidence to the nature credit market, because demand helps the market take off. At the same time, we offer participating companies the opportunity to influence the creation of this new market,” says Marko Mäki‑Hakola.
The Buyers’ Club strengthens the foundations of the market through reliability, transparency and joint development. The aim is to identify together how to build a functional, nationwide market that serves both companies’ needs and domestic landowners.
The Buyers’ Club builds on MTK’s long-term work on nature credit markets. MTK’s Luontoarvot.fi marketplace connects buyers and sellers of nature credits.
-Companies joining the Buyers’ Club demonstrate their willingness to acquire nature credits from the market, thereby encouraging landowners to offer nature credits through market mechanisms. “This initiative is a natural continuation of our launch of Luontoarvot.fi and, for example, the ongoing development of biodiversity offsetting services within forest management associations,” says Jyrki Wallin.
MTK’s nature credit market Buyers’ Club will also, hopefully, provide valuable input to the European Commission in its work on developing nature credit frameworks.
