What is the Buyers’ Club for Nature Credit Markets?
09.06.2026
MTK published a new cooperation model — a Buyers’ Club — on 9 June. The aim is to help accelerate the development of nature credit markets while giving participating companies an opportunity to shape how this new market evolves.
Nature credit markets offer new opportunities for landowners and companies. Under the current Nature Conservation Act, voluntary biodiversity offsetting is already possible. Landowners can earn income from nature restoration, conservation and habitat improvement through the nature credit market. Companies, in turn, can purchase reliably produced nature credits to meet their own sustainability goals. Finland is an international frontrunner in developing nature credit markets. Although supply is emerging, demand is still developing.
The Buyers’ Club established by MTK is one solution to this challenge. It helps buyers connect with sellers of nature credits and take part in the early development of the market. At the same time, participants demonstrate their commitment to reviewing and considering nature credit offerings.
Why the Buyers’ Club matters?
The Buyers’ Club invites and encourages companies and other actors interested in acquiring nature credits or financing nature‑positive actions in Finnish land and water ecosystems. It is designed for frontrunner organisations seeking local, measurable and verified nature credits or other nature‑positive actions as part of their sustainability objectives.
The Buyers’ Club is particularly suitable for organisations that already have environmental commitments, nature‑related targets or a need for transparent and reliable ways to demonstrate their nature‑positive actions. It helps companies secure their long‑term operating conditions while contributing to improved biodiversity.
The Buyers’ Club is also intended for companies looking for a domestic, single‑platform solution for acquiring nature credits without heavy administrative processes. It suits actors who value long‑term cooperation with Finnish rural and forest communities and who want to help build a domestic nature credit market. The Buyers’ Club supports both small and large companies.
A key reference model is the European Commission’s planned Buyers’ Club for carbon markets. Joining the Buyers’ Club does not obligate companies to purchase nature credits, but it does signal a commitment to seriously reviewing available nature credit projects and, where possible, making purchase announcements through MTK’s Luontoarvot.fi service.
All Buyers’ Club discussions are confidential, and competition law requirements are fully respected.
How the Buyers’ Club connects supply and demand
The Buyers’ Club gives participating companies a front‑row seat in shaping the operating principles of Finland’s nature credit markets.
In the initial phase, MTK will invite potential actors it has identified. Other interested organisations are encouraged to contact MTK via the form available on MTK’s website.
Nature credit markets — together with the Buyers’ Club — offer companies a cost‑effective way to acquire nature credits in a measurable, comparable and transparent manner. They are also likely to support growing sustainability and reporting obligations.
In March 2026, MTK launched an updated Luontoarvot.fi marketplace, better aligned with the needs of a more mature nature credit market. This provides a strong foundation for the Buyers’ Club, enabling participating companies to purchase nature credits or nature‑positive actions from landowners through trusted intermediaries.
Nature credit markets and the Buyers’ Club strengthen local vitality
The Buyers’ Club plays a crucial role in launching the nature credit market. Stable demand encourages landowners to offer nature credits.
The development of the nature credit market has significant societal benefits. Local landowners enable companies to carry out meaningful sustainability actions by improving ecological conditions. Income from nature credits strengthens local vitality through revenue and employment. Jobs and income arise not only from the credits themselves but also from restoration and conservation work. The Buyers’ Club deepens cooperation between companies and landowners.
Why MTK is establishing the Buyers’ Club
Together with forest management associations, MTK is one of the leading developers of nature credit markets and has a strong understanding of market bottlenecks and development needs. MTK has already created a globally unique marketplace for nature credits and works closely with top experts in the field.
Most Finnish forest owners and farmers are MTK members through forest management associations or producer organisations. This gives MTK the best possible foundation for bringing even small landowners into the nature credit market. With the support of a forest management association, one of Finland’s first private nature credit transactions was completed in North Karelia between a private landowner and North Karelia Cooperative Society (Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskauppa)
Forest management associations within MTK have all the prerequisites to become key intermediaries in the future nature credit market.
MTK is also actively involved in European‑level development and is a member of the European Commission’s Nature Credits Working Group.
What happens next
During the summer, MTK will contact and invite the potential buyers it has identified. Interested buyers may also register via the online form (link to be added).
After this, MTK will convene the first meeting of the Buyers’ Club, where operating principles will be agreed and the final list of participating organisations confirmed.
The Buyers’ Club will be presented more broadly at the Nature Credit Market Day on 9 September.
